Isabel Vermeulen is a queer half-Filipino multidisciplinary artist who works in Calgary, Alberta, and graduated from Alberta University of the Arts in 2022 with a BFA in sculpture. Her work explores traumatic events that affect one’s physical and mental health, such as sexual abuse, chronic illnesses, and loss of one’s identity. They utilize soft sculpture and ink paintings as a method of compartmentalizing these events. Currently, she is experimenting with photography and digital manipulation using ArtRage Vitae (an artist-friendly and non-AI alternative to Photoshop) to further explore identity and the erasure of it over time. Isabel recognizes the importance of these traumatic events, as it is important to discuss these topics, as they are prominently unacknowledged in society.
