Risa Witten is an artist living and working in Calgary, Alberta. Her practice sits between the realms of painting and sculpture, dealing with form, play and opticality. Using repetition, symmetry, and positive and negative space within a string of inventive and lively compositions, her abstractions build upon themselves, creating a distinct, playful visual language. With an interest in optical phenomenology and colour theory, she builds on a history of colour field painting and optical art, finding ways to establish their contemporary relevance.
Witten holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alberta University of the Arts. In recent years, she has exhibited in galleries across Canada in exhibitions highlighting emerging voices in painting, including Herringer Kiss Gallery (Calgary), Art Mûr (Montreal), and The Art Shop (Vancouver).
Witten is currently completing a Diploma of Interior Decorating at Bow Valley College, where she is also the president of the program's student group. In this role, she creates meaningful professional development and fosters community for her peers. She intends to fuse her rich artistic background with her interior decorating skillset to cultivate a space for herself within Calgary's community of commercial and residential design in the years to come.
